Under a neon tube, in a Hanoi market, a poultry seller cuts up her wares while customers wait between two scooters. At the edge of the table, a printed payment code speaks of today’s Vietnam.

Description

The scene is taken at the heart of a neighbourhood market, in the dark depths of a stall open to the street. At the centre, the seller officiates behind her table covered with a chequered oilcloth: chopping block, knife, feet and pieces of poultry carefully sorted, scales balanced to one side. Her gesture is so swift that her hand dissolves into a slight motion blur. In the foreground, two customers in helmets and masks wait, one absorbed in her phone; their scooters frame the image like stage wings. The bare neon tube, hanging from a wire, carves out the faces and makes the oilcloth shine. The black and white strips the scene of its coloured clutter to keep only its deeper organisation: a theatre of everyday commerce, precise, hierarchical, where everyone plays their part — and where the payment code stuck to the table is a reminder that modernity has found its way even onto the stall.
