Seated on a plastic stool, an elderly woman converses with a face that has appeared behind an iron gate. The whole street seems to have fallen silent to let those few words pass.

Description

Everything in this street scene, caught in Hanoi, hinges on an opening: the half-open leaf of a metal gate, through which slips the face of a young man leaning on the railing. Facing him, an elderly woman, a mask over her face, in a patterned dress, has set her stool on the pavement and waits, hands crossed on her knee. Between them, a threshold — and that strange distance imposed by the closed door, like a visiting room improvised in the middle of the street. Around them, the setting tells of the city without embellishing it: a lowered metal shutter, marked walls, a strapped-up cool box abandoned against the façade. The black and white unifies these worn materials and draws the eye back to the essential, this murmured dialogue between inside and outside. We will never know what is being said; it is precisely that silence the image protects.
