The rules of the art

Fine art photography

  • What is a fine art photograph?French law (article 98 A of the General Tax Code) recognises photography as a work of art under three conditions: it must be taken by the artist, printed by him or under his control, and signed and numbered within a limit of thirty copies, all formats combined. Every XAVIER S. photograph strictly respects this framework: thirty copies at most, including three artist’s proofs, with the files sealed beyond. Each print is produced at the PICTO Paris laboratory, numbered, signed, and accompanied by a stamped certificate of authenticity — provided in printed and digital form. This status of original work of art carries the reduced 5.5% VAT rate.
  • Why acquire a fine art photograph?Because an image stopped you. That is the only true reason — the rest follows. Living with a work means rediscovering that first emotion every day, at a scale and in a material the screen does not know: the depth of a baryta paper, the luminosity of a plexiglass mount, the physical presence of a large format. The limited edition makes your exemplar a rare object: a unique number, which will never exist as a thirty-first print. A fine art photograph is, finally, a patrimonial asset — one that is conserved, passed on, and accompanies the story of its artist. To acquire the work of a living artist is also to take part in his journey.
  • How to buy your fine art photograph?A fine art photograph is traditionally acquired in a gallery, at an exhibition or at auction. The works of XAVIER S. are also available online, at xaviers.photo — a site designed for discerning collectors, offering a complete experience: dimensions customised to the centimetre, a choice of printing techniques and framings, visualisation of the work in situ, and delivery of the certificate of authenticity online as well as in a printed version handed over with the print.
