Description
Taken from above the Atlantic, off Cape Town, this image verges on abstraction. The low evening light has dissolved the horizon into a golden haze; water and sky merge into a single gradation, from deep yellow to copper, animated only by the glittering grain of the swell in the foreground. At the centre, minuscule, a cargo ship traces its course, a shadow-puppet set upon that incandescent expanse. It is the ship that gives the image its scale and its meaning: without that silhouette, there would be only matter; with it, there is a crossing, a slowness, a solitude. The image plays on this contrast between the mute immensity of the ocean and the obstinacy of a working vessel pursuing its route, indifferent to the beauty surrounding it. A meditation on the measure of man before the sea, reduced here to its simplest expression.
