Description
This is the precise hour when the South African bushveld changes register. Photographed near Hoedspruit, at the foot of the great escarpment, the scene sets two worlds against each other: below, the bush already claimed by dusk, a dark, unbroken swell from which the crown of a solitary tree emerges; above, a sky still incandescent, running through every shade from apricot to ashen pink. Between the two, the bluish line of the mountains, reduced to a shadow-theatre cut-out, seems suspended in the evening haze. The composition is one of great economy: three horizontal bands, a single vertical motif, and that end-of-day light doing all the work. The image captures that particular moment in the African bush when colours intensify as the light falls, and when the landscape, before vanishing into the night, is distilled to its essentials — a silhouette, a horizon line, a sky.
