Description
This is how one crosses Kruger National Park: a narrow road, savanna on either side, and the expectation of whatever might appear. Here, the roadway runs in an almost straight line to a ridge where it curves away, and a safari vehicle recedes along it, seen from behind, reduced to a silhouette. All around, the tall grasses blonded by the dry season, the acacias and dark shrubs compose a chequerboard of greens and golds; above, a milky sky, charged with a warm, diffuse light, gently presses down on the scene. The rigorously symmetrical composition makes the road an axis that draws the gaze in — and the vehicle, placed at the centre, becomes the human vanishing point of this immense landscape. It is an image of anticipation more than of encounter: no animal in the frame, but all the promise of the bush, held within this open perspective and this departure towards the light.
