Sitting barefoot on the bench of a covered bridge, an old lady waits for a buyer, her sheaf of lottery tickets in hand. Beneath the conical hat, a direct, patient gaze, with time on its side.

Description

The scene takes place at Thuy Thanh, near Hué, on a covered wooden bridge where people come as much for the shade as for the crossing. The vendor has settled in as if at home: legs folded on the lacquered bench, satchel within reach, and that sheaf of lottery tickets held between her fingertips, almost absent-mindedly. A paper lantern hanging from the timber frame sways near her face, framed by the circle of the conical hat. Beyond the balustrade, the canal and the trees dissolve into a clear light that sets the silhouette off against it. Black and white retains the essential: the floral patterns of her clothing, the grain of her skin, the dark geometry of the wood. It is an unposed portrait, of one of the countless small itinerant trades of Vietnam, where waiting itself becomes a way of inhabiting a place.
