The sky blazes in long orange swirls above the bay, while the city fades into silhouette. On the dark water, the sunset leaves a trail of copper.

Description

From the bay of Miami, at the hour when the day tips over, the sky occupies two thirds of the image and is its true subject. Great scarves of cloud coil across it, set alight by the vanished sun, while on the right a storm mass, almost blue with shadow, advances like a curtain. Below, the horizon line strings out the downtown towers, the first city lights and the harbour cranes, reduced to insect-like silhouettes against the brightness. The water, already claimed by night, keeps in the foreground a long coppery reflection, the only trace of the fire above on its rippled surface. The image holds within this tension between three simultaneous moments — the blaze, the storm and the night — and reminds us that coastal cities live beneath skies vaster than themselves.
