In a freshly cut field, four figures busy themselves around a tractor and its trailer loaded with sacks. Beneath a low sky, the rice harvest proceeds unhurriedly, at human scale.

Description

At Thuy Thanh, near Hué, the rice harvest remains a collective affair. The tractor has stopped amid the flattened stubble; two men standing on the trailer hoist and stack the sacks, while two others, conical hats firmly on their heads, bend over those still waiting in the grass. No one is posing — a single face turns towards the lens, with a smile caught on the wing. Around them, the setting speaks of rural Vietnam today: the line of trees pruned into parasols, the power lines streaking the heavy sky, the road raised behind the hedge. The black and white treatment, with its deep, slightly veiled tones, attunes the scene to that monsoon sky and brings the image close to a memory: the machines have changed, the gestures far less. It is this quiet continuity, between effort and familiarity, that the photograph holds on to.
