The photograph is taken from the street, in Hué, and it is the gate that constructs the image: its black bars and wrought-iron scrolls, the masonry pillar whitewashed and stained by the rains, frame the scene like a stage set. In the middle distance, a man wearing a conical hat pushes a wooden scraper through a sheet of grain spread across the courtyard floor — the rice of the harvest, laid out in a thin layer to dry in the sun, an everyday gesture throughout central Vietnam in the harvest season. The hard light carves out the textures: grain against roughcast, iron against dark foliage. Black and white tightens this play of materials and underlines the composition in successive planes, from the ornate foreground to the absorbed silhouette. An ordinary street scene, in which agricultural labour arrives at the very threshold of the house.
